Neurofeedback sounds futuristic and is actually quite mundane once you see it happen. Sensors read what your brain is doing. A computer responds instantly — usually through sound or a picture. Your brain notices the response, and adjusts. That loop, repeated, is the whole method.
The loop, step by step
Sensors sit on the scalp and read activity. Software watches for the pattern being trained. When activity moves in the desired direction, something pleasant happens: a film plays smoothly, music continues, an image brightens. When it moves away, the reward dims — the film pauses, the sound drops.
You are not asked to do anything with this information. There is no technique to concentrate on and no right way to sit. The adjustment happens below conscious control, in the same way you learned to balance on a bicycle without being able to explain the physics.
Why the gym comparison holds up
Most analogies for neurofeedback are strained. The gym one is not.
You would not expect one visit to the gym to change your fitness. You would expect that regular sessions, over weeks, might build strength that persists — and that if you stopped entirely for a year, some of it would fade. Brain training behaves similarly. It is repetition building a capacity, not a dose producing an effect.
The comparison is also honest about effort and time. A course is typically a run of sessions rather than a single appointment, and results — where they come — tend to arrive gradually rather than in one dramatic moment.
What "training" means, and what it does not
The word matters. Training is something the brain does; treating is something done to a patient. Neurofeedback belongs firmly in the first category.
It may support the nervous system's own capacity to regulate itself. People often describe changes in sleep, in how quickly they settle after something stressful, or in how long they can stay with a task. Those are the kinds of things it can support.
What it does not do is treat, cure or diagnose anything. If you read a claim that neurofeedback cures a named condition, treat that claim with suspicion — whoever is making it has moved past the evidence.
What a session feels like
Undramatic, which surprises people. You sit comfortably. Sensors are placed — painless, held with a little conductive paste. Then you watch or listen while the software does its work. Many people find it relaxing; some find it dull, which is a fair reaction to sitting still for half an hour.
You cannot feel the training happening. There is no sensation from the sensors, because nothing is being sent into you. Tiredness afterwards is common early on, in the way that a new kind of exercise leaves you tired.
A realistic picture of a course
Nobody can honestly promise a number of sessions in advance, because responses vary. What is reasonable to expect is a course rather than a one-off, a check-in along the way to see whether anything is shifting, and a willingness to stop if it is not helping. A practitioner who cannot say "this may not be for you" is not giving you the full picture.
Where a QEEG has been done first, it gives the training somewhere to aim and gives you a baseline to compare against later. It is not compulsory, but it does make the process less guesswork.
Sessions at home
