Parents who get in touch have usually been reading for a while, and usually arrive with the same handful of questions. These are those questions, answered as plainly as possible — including the places where the honest answer is "we cannot promise that".
Does it hurt?
No. This is almost always the first question, and the answer is genuinely reassuring. The sensors only listen. Nothing is sent into your child, there are no needles, and there is nothing to feel from the sensors themselves. A little conductive paste holds them in place and washes out afterwards.
Most children are more bothered by the idea of sitting still than by anything physical.
What does a session actually involve?
Your child sits comfortably and watches something — a film, a game-like display — while sensors read activity. When the pattern being trained moves in the right direction, the film plays smoothly. When it drifts, the film dims or pauses. Your child does not have to try to make this happen, and telling them to concentrate harder does not help.
From the outside it looks like a child watching television. That is roughly what it is, with the television paying attention back.
Why does it matter that it happens at home?
More than most people expect. A child who has been driven across the city, walked into an unfamiliar building and sat in a waiting room has already used up a good deal of regulation before the session starts. At home, that whole layer is gone. They are in their own room, on their own sofa, with their own things nearby.
For children who find new places difficult, this is often the difference between a session that works and one that never really settles.
Will it help with school?
Here is where honesty matters more than salesmanship.
Neurofeedback may support attention, and some parents describe changes in how long a child can stay with a task or how quickly they recover from frustration. Those are the kinds of things brain training can support.
What nobody can promise is a grade, a behaviour outcome, or a specific improvement by a specific date. Any practitioner who guarantees an academic result is selling something they cannot deliver. School performance depends on sleep, teaching, friendships, home life, interest and a dozen other things that no training can override.
Can it diagnose my child?
No, and this is important. Neither neurofeedback nor QEEG brain mapping diagnoses anything. They do not name conditions and they are not medical tests. If you are seeking a diagnosis, that is properly the work of a qualified medical professional, and a QEEG map is not a substitute for that assessment.
What a map may do is help you explore what you are already observing at home, and give you clearer language for conversations with the professionals involved in your child's care.
How old does a child need to be?
There is no single cut-off. The practical question is whether a child can sit reasonably still and engaged for the length of a session. Some six-year-olds manage this comfortably; some ten-year-olds find it hard on a given day. This is worth discussing honestly before booking rather than discovering mid-course.
What is expected of me as a parent?
Less than you might think during the session, and more than you might think around it. You do not need to coach your child while sensors are on — in fact it usually helps not to. What genuinely matters is consistency of appointments, honest reporting of what you notice at home between sessions, and a willingness to say when something does not seem to be working.
What if it does not help?
Then it should stop. Not every approach suits every child, and a course that is not producing anything is not made better by extending it. A check-in partway through exists precisely so that this conversation can happen early rather than after months of appointments.
