What Is QEEG Brain Mapping? A Plain-English Guide

If someone has suggested a QEEG and you have never heard the term, the name does it no favours. QEEG stands for quantitative electroencephalography, which is a long way of saying: we record the brain's electrical activity, then run the recording through statistics so it can be compared and read as a map.

What is actually being measured

Your brain cells communicate using small electrical signals. When millions of them fire in rhythm, that rhythm is strong enough to be picked up at the scalp. A soft cap holding a set of sensors sits on the head and listens. Nothing is sent into you — the sensors only receive, in the same way a microphone records sound without adding any.

Those rhythms are grouped by speed. Slower rhythms tend to dominate when we are drowsy or drifting; faster ones when we are alert, focused, or busy. A healthy brain moves fluidly between them as the situation demands. What a QEEG looks at is the pattern: which rhythms are dominant, where, and how readily the brain shifts between states.

What happens during the recording

The practical part is undramatic. The cap goes on, a conductive gel helps the sensors make contact, and then you sit still — usually a few minutes with eyes closed, a few with eyes open, and sometimes a simple task. The recording itself takes about twenty minutes. Most of the appointment is setup and settling.

It is not painful. There are no needles, nothing is injected, and there is no radiation of any kind. The most common complaint is that the gel needs washing out afterwards.

What the report shows

The raw recording is unreadable to anyone who is not trained in it — pages of squiggling lines. The quantitative step converts it into something a person can actually look at: colour maps of the head showing where particular rhythms are stronger or weaker than expected, and how regions are coordinating with one another.

Those maps are compared against a normative database — recordings from many people of similar age. That comparison is what makes the map meaningful. A given amount of slow-wave activity might be entirely ordinary at seven years old and noteworthy at forty.

What it can and cannot tell you

This is the part worth being clear about, because it is where expectations most often run ahead of reality.

A QEEG can describe patterns of activity and coordination across the brain. It can give you a picture of how your nervous system tends to regulate itself, and it can support a conversation about what you are noticing in daily life — sleep that will not settle, attention that slides, a sense of being permanently switched on.

A QEEG cannot diagnose a condition. It is not a medical test and it does not produce a medical verdict. Two people with very similar maps can have quite different lived experiences, and two people with the same difficulty can have quite different maps. The map is one useful source of information alongside your own account of your life — never a replacement for it.

Tomographic mapping

Standard mapping describes activity at the surface. A tomographic module goes a step further, estimating where in the deeper structures of the brain that activity is most likely originating. It adds depth to the picture. It is still an estimate produced by a model, not a photograph of the inside of your head, and it is read with that in mind.

Who tends to find it useful

People generally arrive for one of a few reasons. Some want a baseline before starting neurofeedback, so that training has somewhere to aim and progress can be compared later. Some are simply curious and want to understand their own patterns. Parents often want a clearer picture of what is happening for a child who is struggling to settle or focus.

None of those reasons requires a diagnosis, and none of them is a promise of an outcome. A map is a starting point for a conversation.
